The TikTok trend positions live snail slime as superior to formulated products. The science tells a more complex story:
- Concentration and standardization: A live snail deposits an unpredictable, variable amount of secretion. Formulated products use standardized concentrations (typically 96% SSF) that deliver consistent, measurable doses.
- Microbial contamination risk: Garden snails carry significant microbial load β including bacteria (Pseudomonas, Aeromonas), parasites (Angiostrongylus cantonensis β rat lungworm), and fungi. Placing a garden snail on compromised acne-prone skin introduces these organisms directly to an already-inflamed barrier (Wang et al., 2008 β PMID: 18419355).
- Stability of bioactives: Allantoin and glycoproteins in raw snail secretion are unstable when exposed to air, UV, and skin enzymes. Formulated products use preservation systems and pH optimization to maintain bioactive stability.
