Pore Minimising Protocol: The Science of Visibly Smaller Pores
You cannot shrink pores - but you can make them appear significantly smaller by clearing their contents, maintaining surrounding collagen, and controlling sebum production. 1. Salicylic Acid: The Pore-Clearing Active
BHA (salicylic acid) is lipophilic and penetrates the sebaceous follicle to dissolve the lipid-rich sebum plug that distends the pore opening. At 2%, it reduces visible pore size by clearing follicular content, reducing comedone formation, and mildly suppressing sebum production via anti-inflammatory effects on the sebaceous gland. 2. Retinoids: The Long-Game Pore Treatment
Retinoids reduce pore visibility via two mechanisms: normalising follicular hyperkeratinisation (preventing the dead skin cell buildup that stretches pore openings) and stimulating perifollicular collagen production that physically tightens the skin surrounding each pore. 3. Niacinamide: The Sebum Regulator
Niacinamide at 5-10% reduces sebum excretion rate by approximately 18-23% at 8 weeks via inhibition of lipogenesis in sebocytes. Reduced sebum production means less follicular distension and smaller apparent pore size. It also strengthens the barrier, reducing surface dehydration that makes pores appear more pronounced. 4. Collagen Support: The Structural Approach
Perifolicular collagen provides the structural scaffold that keeps pore openings taut. Pore size is largely genetic. No topical product can permanently shrink a pore's anatomical diameter. Results are maintenance-dependent - pores return to previous appearance when the routine stops.
