Combination Skin Protocol: The Science of Zone-Specific Skincare
Combination Skin Protocol
The Science of Zone-Specific Skincare
Combination skin means your T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) behaves like oily skin while your cheeks and outer face behave like normal to dry skin. The mistake most people make is treating the whole face the same way — either over-stripping the cheeks trying to control T-zone oil, or under-treating the T-zone trying to protect dry cheeks. Zone-specific application is the solution.
The Science of Combination Skin
Sebaceous gland density is not uniform across the face. The T-zone contains the highest concentration of sebaceous glands — up to 900 glands/cm² on the nose compared to approximately 100/cm² on the cheeks. Androgen receptors on these glands drive differential sebum production, making the T-zone significantly oilier than the cheek zone in most people. The cheeks, with lower gland density, tend toward normal or dry — with a lipid barrier more susceptible to TEWL, sensitivity, and dehydration. The practical implication is that combination skin requires different ingredient concentrations and product textures applied to different facial zones, not a single product compromised for both.
Zone-Specific Active Strategy
T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) — treat like oily skin:
Niacinamide 10% — sebum regulation. BHA 2% salicylic acid 3-4x/week — follicle clearing. Lightweight gel or fluid moisturiser. Spot-apply clay mask weekly. Avoid heavy emollient creams and oils on T-zone.
Cheeks and outer face — treat like normal to dry skin:
Hyaluronic acid serum — hydration. Ceramide-rich moisturiser — barrier support. Avoid applying BHA directly to dry cheek zones unless congestion is present there. Heavier occlusive seal PM if cheeks are significantly dry.
Products That Work for the Whole Face
The goal is to find a base routine that works across all zones, then modify application by zone for targeted actives. These work for all combination skin zones:
Niacinamide 5-10%: Regulates T-zone sebum while strengthening cheek barrier — the most combination-skin-friendly active available.
Hyaluronic acid: Hydrates without adding oil to the T-zone. Apply everywhere.
Squalane: Lightweight, non-comedogenic, Malassezia-safe — the one oil safe to apply across all zones including T-zone.
Mineral SPF 50+ (fluid/gel formula): Zinc oxide provides sebum control on T-zone while protecting cheeks. Avoid heavy cream SPFs on T-zone.

AM Routine (whole face):
1. Gentle gel cleanser
2. Hyaluronic acid serum on damp skin (all zones)
3. Black Rice Niacinamide Concentrate — all zones
4. Lightweight fluid moisturiser (all zones) OR ceramide cream on cheeks only + skip or use gel on T-zone
5. Mineral SPF 50+ fluid formula
PM Routine:
1. Double cleanse if wearing SPF
2. BHA 2% — T-zone only, 3-4x/week
3. Hyaluron 3D Hydrator — cheeks and all zones
4. Black Rice Niacinamide Concentrate — all zones

6. Lightweight moisturiser all zones; add ceramide cream or squalane to cheeks only if dry
7. Retinol 0.3% 2-3x/week — all zones or T-zone focus
Weekly: Clay mask on T-zone only. Gentle lactic acid mask on cheeks only if needed for texture.
Black Rice Niacinamide Concentrate — Works across all zones: sebum control T-zone, barrier support cheeks
Hyaluron 3D Hydrator Multi Lamellar Cream-Serum — Lightweight hydration safe across all zones
Peptide Serum with Custard Apple and Blood Orange — Zone-neutral collagen and barrier support
Results Timeline
Week 2-4: T-zone shine and congestion improving with BHA and niacinamide. Cheek comfort improving with HA and ceramides.
Month 2: Zone differentiation becomes less extreme as sebum is regulated and barrier is repaired.
Month 3+: Combination skin can trend toward more balanced behaviour with consistent zone-specific protocol.
